BUILT to be the BEST Period! American Owned

Certifications & Independent Testing: Built for the Toughest Conditions

NOTE: These certifications apply to our line of freeze protection heaters for Boat, RV and Industrial applications.  Our Cabin Heaters, which are intended only for living spaces , are not tested to or rated for these standards.

“Built to be the Best” is more than a motto here at Xtreme Heaters. We back our claims with serious, independent testing and certifications that go way beyond what other manufacturers do.

Xtreme Heaters are often the first and only compartment heaters to pass certain standards. That means real safety and performance in boats, RVs, industrial setups, and anywhere moisture, cold, vibration, or flammable vapors are part of the picture. The goal is simple: build heaters that won't let you down when conditions get ugly.

These tests are performed by accredited independent labs. If your interest lies in one particular standard or test, you can jump directly to that section here:

IP68 Waterproof & Dustproof Rating

Every Xtreme Heater carries an IP68 rating under IEC 60529. That's the top level of protection: completely dust-tight and safe for long submersion in water past 1 meter. At the time of this writing, no other forced air compartment heater holds this certification.

Internal elements are sealed. Electronics are fully encapsulated with potting compound. The thermostat is sealed the same way, and the custom fan we use already has its own IP68 rating.

What the tests involved:

Dust test (IP6X): Probed every possible point (except gaskets) with a 1mm wire probe under 1N force per IEC 61032 Test Probe D. Then placed in a dust chamber at ambient pressure. Used dry GN₂ gas to circulate talcum powder (passed through a sieve with 50µm wires and 75µm gaps) at 2kg per cubic meter. Ran for 8 hours. Zero dust got inside the potted electrical components or fan after external cleaning and inspection.

Water test (IPX8): Immersed in a pressure vessel at 2.84 PSI (simulating 2 meters depth) for 1 hour. Water temp within 5K of the heater's temp. Weighed before and after; no significant water entry. Inspected per IEC 60529: no water on insulation or power cable that could cause issues. Powered on post-test and ran normally in heating and cooling modes.

Boats deal with bilge water, washdowns, rain, and occasional flooding. RVs see wet storage compartments and plumbing leaks. Basic "wet location" ratings aren't enough in those situations. IP68 gives real protection where it counts.

Electricity and water are a bad combination. With IP68, our heaters stay sealed and keep running even when things get soaked. That cuts down on failures and makes them last longer.

Ignition Protection for Marine & RV Safety

All of our freeze protection heaters pass strict ignition protection standards They won't spark or ignite flammable vapors in closed spaces like engine compartments, bilges, chemical storage or RV propane/gas areas.

Standards met:

ISO 8846:2017 (marine ignition protection)

SAE J1171:2023 (electrical components in marine and RV use)

U.S. Coast Guard Title 33 CFR, Part 183.410

Testing details:

Explosive atmosphere test: Cycled on and off 50 times in a 4.75% ±0.25% propane-air mix at rated voltage and load. Activated using freeze spray per our instructions. No ignition ever. Mixture verified explosive multiple times during the run.

Temperature check: Ran at max load to confirm safe surface and internal temps. (External surface temp test omitted due to intermittent duty cycle.)

Everything passed cleanly. No sparks, no unsafe heat buildup, no ignition of testing mixture.

Confined spaces often have gasoline fumes, propane, or other flammables around. A regular heater can turn into a fire risk fast. Our ignition-protected design keeps that from happening and protects people, boats, and gear.

As part of the test, the mixture is ignited intentionally to prove gasses sufficient for ignition are present in the chamber.

MIL-SPEC Environmental Durability Testing

We put our heaters through MIL-STD-810E military environmental tests. These are the same standards used for gear that has to survive extreme conditions in real operations. This standard focuses on tailoring tests to replicate the environmental stresses equipment might face during its life cycle, like in military vehicles, aircraft, or harsh field use. For our heaters, that means proving they can handle the rough stuff in marine and RV settings without breaking down.

Tests passed:

Vibration (Method 514.4): This checks how well the heater stands up to constant shaking, like from engines, waves, or bumpy roads. It included random vibration (simulating unpredictable real-world jolts) and sine sweep vibrations (steady frequencies from 5 to 500 Hz) over multiple hours at varying g-forces. No parts loosened, no wear, no breakdowns – just solid performance.

Humidity (Method 507.3): Long exposure in high-humidity chambers to mimic damp bilges or lockers. This test looks at resistance to warm, humid climates that could cause corrosion, electrical shorts, or material breakdown. We used Procedure I for induced (storage/transit) and natural cycles, plus an aggravated procedure for more extreme temp/humidity combos than you'd see in nature. No corrosion or moisture damage showed up.

Low temperature (Method 502.3): Ran at -40°F to simulate deep freezes, like winter storage or cold-weather camping. This evaluates effects on safety, performance, and integrity during storage, operation, and handling in cold conditions. The heater started and operated normally without any issues.

High temperature (Method 501.3): Ran at 140°F to test hot environments, like summer engine compartments or desert storage. This assesses how high temps affect material integrity, safety, and performance during storage and operation. Stayed safe, no overheating or degradation.

Bottom line: Xtreme Heaters handled it all without missing a beat.

Marine and RV heaters take constant shaking from engines, waves, or roads. They sit in damp bilges or lockers, face freezing winters, and bake in summer heat. Passing military-spec tests proves ours hold up under that kind of abuse better than others.

From full IP68 waterproofing to ignition safety and military-grade toughness, we run tests that most competitors skip entirely. The result is heaters that are safer, more durable, and better performing in the kinds of harsh environments our customers actually face. That's how we deliver real peace of mind.
